++ James Gunn on Filmmaking ++

This spoke so loudly to me.. maybe it will speak to you as well.

James Gunn's kickass MySpace blog post on Filmmaking... but it can be applied to so many other creative areas in your life as well

    eh.

if the 'entertaiment' industry was making things i truly even gave two shits about maybe some of this would apply.

sure, yeah success sucks. but this is a culture that rewards mediocrity, in spades.

one of my art teachers once told me that all anyone ever wants is a painting that goes with their living room ensamble.

if they nuked LA tomorrow it would be too late.

i wonder what terry gilliam has to say about being a film maker?

This is a loaded post, and by that, i mean one which commands a lot of response.

I am just too tired right now to do that, but i will be back tomorrow with a reply or three.

You bring up several great points here, Mr. Nem's.

By the way, i love the "Nemo World Order" [good one!].. although i might be afraid to live in that reality.. but you do seem to like me so i might be safe living in it LOL

    Ok, here we go.

I was just having this same discussion with another friend the other night. Mediocrity is something which seems to be greatly rewarded in our culture, and i cannot fathom why. Perhaps because the people who are somewhere in the middle of everything, with few
opinions, thoughts or goals are the "safe" ones? People don't become a "problem" until they start planting contrary seeds. The mediocre majority may rule, but this makes for a very gray environment.

Now, in this same conversation we spoke about art and how anything with a message or purpose is basically ignored or overlooked. I shared my theory as to why this is, and my theory states that the average person is shallow and non-committal, and honestly does not want to think. They are much more easily pleased with a piece of art which pulls together the threads in the carpet, with the weave of their sofa, that with something that makes a statement. And here we are right back to the mediocrity discussion about why the most boring and ordinary things seem to also be the most popular.

Which came first.. the chicken or the egg?

This post reminds me of the final scene in Amadeus where Salieri is being wheeled through the insane asylum while shouting "Mediocrities everywhere... I absolve you".

And if that wasn't the perfect statement about how fucked up things are, i don't know what is.
